Our History & Tradition
TORI—Traditional Okinawan Ryu Instructors—was founded on a deep respect for the heritage and discipline of Okinawan martial arts.
In 1989, Master Sharon English established the dojo in the Mustang community after spending five years studying and teaching in Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. Bringing with her the principles and techniques of traditional Okinawan te, she created TORI as a place where authentic instruction and timeless values could take root.
Following her retirement in 2004, Master English entrusted the dojo to her black belt instructors. Leadership passed to Shihan Pat Tyner, 6th Dan, who continued to uphold and strengthen TORI’s tradition. Widely respected in the community, Shihan Tyner also served as a Sergeant with the Mustang Police Department. In addition to his sixth-degree black belt in Okinawan Karate, he holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and is certified in tactical training, bringing a practical and disciplined perspective to his instruction.
In 2011, Shihan Tyner retired and passed the dojo on to the next generation of leadership. Today, TORI is led by Sensei Chris Tyner, 4th Dan, alongside a dedicated team of experienced black belt instructors who carry forward the dojo’s legacy.
Rooted in tradition, our dojo emphasizes respect, discipline, honor, ethics, and wisdom. Our curriculum is comprehensive, blending classical training with practical application, including self-defense, kata, sparring, kicking techniques, situational awareness, and refined technical skill.

Chris’s journey in martial arts spans more than 25 years, marked by dedication, discipline, and a deep respect for the craft. Earning his 4th Degree Black Belt, he has spent decades refining both his technique and his approach to teaching.
His instruction blends the time-honored traditions of martial arts with modern, practical applications. Known for his creative and engaging style, Chris challenges his students to grow—physically and mentally—while keeping training both dynamic and enjoyable. Beneath every class is a strong foundation of core values and fundamental skills, shaping students into well-rounded martial artists.
At the heart of Chris’s passion is self-defense. He believes in empowering others with the knowledge and confidence to use their own body as a tool for protection and strength. Whether breaking down complex techniques or helping a student overcome a challenge, Chris brings a problem-solving mindset and steady guidance to everything he does.
Above all, he is someone his students can rely on—both on and off the mat.
